Blue Valley School District Wilderness Science Center Garden
“Gardening for the Future of Our Earth”
The Wilderness Science Center (WSC) garden is a partnership between the Johnson County Extension Master Gardeners and the Blue Valley School District to manage the Wilderness Science Center garden located beside Blue Valley Middle School on 163rd Terrace in Overland Park, Kansas.
The site demonstrates environmentally friendly gardening practices using plants that are native to the four surrounding states. These plants attract and support birds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators that make possible the flowers and food products that we enjoy and need. This style of gardening substantiates the interdependence between animals and plants.
The WSC classrooms are used by the resident science teacher to instruct students from the entire school district. The garden and adjoining wilderness are used for teaching purposes, although the EMGs have no obligation to or contact with the students.
